QUESTION: New Vehicle 'Fuel' Mileage?

An important question,
What amount of fuel mileage, in Miles Per Gallon (MPG), should a new land transportation vehicle achieve?
Automobile =
Truck =
A very interesting article about the forthcoming 2006 TOYOTA 'Yaris' (their 'Echo' replacement) car which achieves 41-51 MPG (City/Highway) with a small 1.5 liter gasoline fueled ICE powerplant and manual transmission.

Its sad that the old Geo metros used to get close to 60mpg, but that was over 10 years ago. A friend had one, and used to brag about it, I didn't believe it until we took a trip together. That little 1L 3cylinder was pretty efficient, and dirt cheap to boot.

Thanks for your response,
My dad is now questioning why his new 'PT Cruiser' offers poor fuel mileage compared to a dated MAXIMA. (20 years old and still achieves 20/26MPG!)
Hopefully, U.S. vendors will innovate!
